A Chance to Heal recognizes companies, private sectors, entities or foundations that have made a significant contribution in providing resources or improving awareness about the need for informed understanding about eating disorders and its impact on individuals and families. Through implementation or support of comprehensive prevention or education programs, these entities have created the opportunity for enhanced focus on this health issue.
This year’s award goes to CIGNA for their ongoing work to promote mental “health” for their clients and their employees. CIGNA developed “It’s time to” web portal with accurate and impactful advice on the treatment of eating disorders. In 2008, CIGNA Foundation held a Mind/Body Forum to help both the community and its employees learn about the affects of mental health on physical well-being, and positioned A Chance to Heal as an important member of this community.

A Chance to Heal recognizes an individual who has taken a leadership role in bringing the issues of those at risk for or living with eating disorders, to a wider audience. Through their efforts they have demonstrated an understanding of the importance of prevention and education in improving the lives of those afflicted with eating disorders.
This year’s award goes to Stephen Shaw, a high school Junior, who created and coordinated an evening jazz concert that raised $15,000 as well as awareness of this disorder. A Chance to Heal was one of three beneficiary organizations. The concert drew nearly 400 people, who learned invaluable information about eating disorders between sets. Mr. Shaw dedicated the evening to the memory of his aunt who died from anorexia and in honor of his sister who has been struggling with the illness for over six years.
A Chance to Heal applauds Stephen Shaw’s understanding that eating disorders need to be openly discussed in order to help those who suffer truly recover.
